Checkout.com now supports Visa Payment Passkey, offering its merchants a new method to authenticate online card payments.
With the passkey, shoppers confirm a purchase using their device unlock method, such as a fingerprint or face scan, rather than a one-time passcode (OTP).
Authentication is essential to securing online payments, yet additional verification steps can cost merchants sales.
According to Checkout.com, replacing OTPs with a passkey reduces friction at checkout while maintaining strong security.
Eligible merchants can offer the passkey through the authentication infrastructure they already use, so no new checkout flow is required.
When passkey authentication is unavailable, the transaction proceeds with existing verification methods.
The rollout will take place in phases, beginning with selected merchants across the UK and Europe. The passkey supports both first-time and returning customers.
Checkout.com noted that it is particularly relevant for businesses with frequent repeat purchases, including retailers, marketplaces, food delivery platforms and digital services.
The company views strong, user-friendly authentication as a foundation for the next phase of digital commerce.
As AI agents initiate more purchases, trusted ways to verify the person behind a payment and their purchase intent become more important.
In addition, Checkout.com is supporting Visa’s Trusted Agent Protocol, which helps merchants distinguish trusted AI shopping agents from bots and malicious traffic.
“Visa Payment Passkey lets returning shoppers authenticate the way they already unlock their phone, making checkout both safer and simpler,”
said Rami Josef, Senior Product Director at Checkout.com.

“By bringing Visa Payment Passkey to Checkout.com’s merchants, we’re making it easier for businesses to reduce friction at checkout and for consumers to authenticate securely,”
said Mathieu Altwegg, Head of Product and Solutions at Visa.
